Title/Affiliation: Professor of Psychology and Senior Fellow in Criminal Justice, Rutgers University, Newark
About Dr. Boxer: Paul Boxer studies the development, prevention, and treatment of violent and nonviolent antisocial behavior, particularly among youths involved in the juvenile justice system. The current focus of Boxer’s scholarly agenda centers on the study of evidence-based practices in the juvenile justice system; the impact of violence and crime in communities on youth development, and the role of youth gangs in the development and persistence of antisocial behavior.

Boxer is the Director of the Rutgers Center on Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice. He is a Professor of Psychology at Rutgers-Newark, an Affiliated Faculty Member of the Rutgers School of Social Work, and an adjunct Research Scientist in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Boxer’s research has been funded by the US Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute of Mental Health, the US Bureau of Justice Assistance, the National Science Foundation, and the US Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime.

Representative papers and publications

Gang involvement appears to reduce the effectiveness of Multisystemic Therapy (Boxer Et Al., 2015, Children and Youth Services Review).

Police data can be helpful in understanding the impact of exposure to violent crime on children (Boxer Et Al., 2014, Violence and Victims).

Higher level political forces can “trickle down” to socialize aggression among children in war-torn regions of the world (Boxer Et Al., 2013, Child Development).

Title/Affiliation: Distinguished Clinical Professor of Law, Justice Virginia Long Scholar and Director, Criminal and Youth Justice Clinic Rutgers School of Law – Newark 
About Professor Cohen:  Laura Cohen is a Clinical Professor of Law, the Justice Virginia Long Scholar, and Director of the Criminal and Youth Justice Clinic (CYJC) at Rutgers Law School in Newark. Prior to joining the Rutgers faculty, Laura was the Director of Training for the New York City Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Division, Deputy Court Monitor for the U.S. District Court, District of Puerto Rico in a federal class action challenging conditions of confinement in Puerto Rico’s prisons; Senior Policy Analyst for the Violence Institute of New Jersey; and staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Division in the Bronx. In 2013, Laura was appointed as an expert consultant in the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division’s investigation of alleged systemic due process violations in the St. Louis County, Missouri Juvenile Court. In addition, she co-directs the Northeast Juvenile Defender Center, a regional affiliate of the National Juvenile Defender Center.

Laura has received numerous awards in recognition of her work on behalf of youth and published on topics ranging from juvenile justice and parole to legal ethics and lawyering theory. She earned her B.A. summa cum laude from Rutgers College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and her J.D. from Columbia Law School, where she was Managing Editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review.

Name: Jennifer Irvingjenn
About Jenn: Jennifer graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rutgers University in 2013. She is currently enrolled in the School of Social Work where she will obtain her MSW. One of her current research interests is studying the effectiveness of re-entry resources available to recently released offenders.

About Sheila: Sheila is the Program Assistant for our center. She received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rutgers Newark in 2014. As an undergraduate Sheila was a research assistant in Dr. Boxer’s lab. She assisted Dr. Schappell in collecting data at Hudson County Correctional Center, researching the impact of incarceration on mental health and the subsequent challenges encountered upon release. Sheila is currently pursuing her MSW in Rutgers School of Social Work. She is specializing in Clinical Social Work.

About Carolina:Carolina is a psychology doctoral student at Rutgers-Newark. She has a Master’s Degree in Social Work and had been doing clinical work with
high-risk adolescents for several years prior to starting her research career. Her research areas include adolescent trauma, addiction, and maladaptive coping behaviors.

PhD Student_Joanna Kubik_1.1Name: Jo Kubik
About Jo: Jo is currently a doctoral student at the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice. Previously, she worked as a project manager for the Rutgers Social Developmental Research Program. Her research focuses primarily on youth in the criminal justice system, with an emphasis on gang involvement and mental illness. Joanna holds a Masters degree in Social Work from Rutgers University and Masters degree in European Studies from Jagiellonian University.
